Be Inclusive – But not the Kitchen Sink

don't include kitchen sink

A proper Case for Support should be mission and vision driven. The Case will therefore follow a central theme, and the projects proposed should follow that theme. The research should be extensive, and the plan may have many proposed projects.

Where do you cut it off?

I’m reminded of a mid-sized church I worked with in New York. When reviewing the Case, a potential major donor looked at me and said, “Gee, they’ve added so many different projects to interest different groups in the church. They might have thrown in a “kitchen sink” to make everyone happy.”

My advice? Follow the theme driven by your mission statement and consider a mission component where you can make an impact gift. Do not add operating fund needs or program needs unless you identify the funding for a specific time frame as “seed money” for a new ministry.
