Henri Nouwen reminded us pastors that fundraising is a kind of ministry (A Spirituality of Fundraising).
It bears repeating. Over and over again. In 21st century America, many of us are trapped inside a consumeristic worldview that offers no lasting meaning for our lives. We worry and we fret – we live in fear of any number of things.
On the other hand:
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”
“True love casts out fear.”
“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
The key to true happiness lies in the ability to give ourselves over in love for another human being. Even science is proving this to us now.
For that reason, fundraising is pastoral care. Every gift that a parishioner makes to your congregation or to another noble cause brings the donor one step closer to God.
Nonprofit communications guru Jeff Brooks puts it this way:
A donor-focused nonprofit sees fundraising as part of its mission – Future Fundraising Now.
“The place where you put your treasure is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.”
